Cynic, Detonation - Reunion of progressive legends
This live review is overdue big time, but it at least didn't took us as long as Cynic's rehab duration. Here's our review of the legendary Cynic supported by Detonation.I remember the concerning day as a dreadful one, a common workday that I decided to end with a gig from the legendary Cynic, a band of which I never heard anything of before. I travelled for more than six hours in total to be present, and so I was happy that Dutch melodeath outfit Detonation was the supporting act. With that appointment I was at least assured of one quality metal show. And with the word 'quality' I already gave the best description of their performance, because these guys know how to handle their instruments. No need to expect big moshpits during Detonation live, just excellent melodic death metal that gets played with a lot of feeling. I even have to admit that - while standing in the great triangle, close to the sound desk - I occasionally closed my eyes to just let it overcome, a great relish. I can't say anything else then that I've seen Holland's best melodic death metallers! (Mindsaver)
I have to admit, I'm a big Cynic fan, but somehow I didn't had any goose bumps or anything like that, whilst waiting for the band to start. Some guys/girls in the crowd seemed like crackwhores, feverishly low on drugs and waiting for their fix. I was happy to hear that the band was blessed with an excellent sound for this evening and opener "Veil Of Maya" was a good way to start this evening. As known, Tony Teegarden's vocals came from samples, which didn't really add to the whole performance (which was excellent).
The only exception was during one of my favourite songs; "Uroboric Forms". Apparently the band made a deal with a local fan, who came up stage to do Tony's screams. If they did that for every song it would work out much better... and I don't believe that this band has a lack of fans. My personal highlight was the cover of Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Meeting Of The Spirits"; it was awesome to hear a classic jazz/fusion tune to be played by a band like Cynic.
Although most fans had already heard the new song "Evolutionary Sleeper" through the big bad internet, it was awesome to hear a brand new Cynic tune. Masvidal said that there will be around 8 other new songs, so I hope he can make that new record just as interesting as Focus. All in all a very impressive show. I didn't get "blown away", but the level of musicianship and finally hearing some of those classics live did make me go home with a smile. (Carn)
